Yes! 1 have been aware of "It Made You Happy When You Made

lit may interest you to know that 1 also have records that were made
l.fiam 1924 to 1927 that have tunes similar to "Hello Doily'' at least
J- portions MELODICALLY dead ringers of this million dollar hit,

First of all 1 will list the records and orchestras in my collection

** From Jerome Shipman, ■Potomac Maryland
Like Harold Hartel I was stimulated enough by Paul Burgess's
"I've Heard That Song Before" in RR#98 to send a few additional
items to him, I suppose every jazz listener who is at all serious or
persistent about It has jotted down or made mental notes (in my
case i might as well not bother) of similarities in tunes, solos, and
records. Some years ago I published an article, not very well focussed
which listed, among other things, a few solos which were lifted
bodily from one record to another. For example, Rappolo's solo on
M1LENBURG JOYS with the NORK appears orchestrated for clarinets
on McKInney's Cotton Pickers MILENBURG. (Incidentally, the
version of the tune by the Seven Missing Links is pretty much a copy
of the NORK's, ) I'm not exactly sure what the significance of the
migration of a solo or the transformation of a tune Is, but I feel that
some tell us about influences and that sort of thing, and that they
have some meaning in jazz history, the anatomy of improvisation,
and so on, It is certainly significant that Dickey Wells' solo on
Lloyd Scott's SYMPHONIC SCRONTCH, which Andre Hodeir thought
so important In HOMMES ET PROBLEMES DU JAZZ (". . . le solo de
SYMPHONIE SCREACH (sic) est deja d ! un style personnel") is nothing
but a note for note copy of Charlie Green's solo on Henderson's
GOUDGE OF ARMOUR AVENUE! Now the great merit of Paul
Burgess's research Is that he systematized and ordered what is usually
a disorganized mess, I know In my own case I would make a note In
a discography, or on a record-jacket,-: or) oneaGf those pointless mental
jobs 1 mentioned earlier; and when It came to checking something
out I might have one item on a 78,.. another on a "tape, a third on an
LP. I had misplaced, so I never did -maice the' verification. Paul
Burgess took us beyond all that into the realm of reason. But I'm
afraid you have indulged Harold Hartel, as he has indulged himself,
with half- remembered phrases.. from the Record Changer, liner notes,
and half™ remembered passages from 78s he- no longer has, self-
confessed tin- eared memories, and the like. Some of his own
remarks are common knowledge, as for example, Ms H- 9 (Rudy
Jackson could be the link there) and H-8. Now with regard to his
H-4 8 267|, what the Spoonful's WILD' ABOUT MY LOVIN should
' have reminded him of is- Jim Jackson's Victor, A number of rock
groups have versions of "classic" country blues: The Rolling Stones*
LOVE IN VAIN of a year or so ago is Robert Johnson's, they've done
Robert Wilkins' THAT'S NO WAY TO GET ALONG, the Spoonful did
Henry Thomas's FISHING BLUES, and men there's Canned Heat, But
this would take'us too far. afield, and besides I'm not well enough
informed;" I'm riot really" knocking Hartel THAT much — how could
I? he's me in spades. But we need the rational Paul Burgess back if
we are going to get anywhere,

A related research topic, of which the cover of RR#106 Is a

reminder: stock arrangements of the '20s, Who did them, who
.played:- them '.on records? I think Martin Williams has done a little
"WbWalong 'these. lilies. -. . . ■■;.::::: .-'■'.■ ■■■■■.■■■

DISCOVERING VITAPHONE TRANSCRIPTIONS,
RESEARCHING FLEXIBLE PLASTIC DISCS FROM THE
20's and 30*s.
Data from Dave Cotter, Cambeli, Calif,

I was playing a few musical oddities for a friend the
other day when I discovered a Vitaphone mixed in my
stack of radio transcriptions. Obviously I couldn't file
this anyplace else because of its size . . _ anyway » , ,
it was a damn good record. What I was wondering
about is, what kind of a short subject was shown with
it???? Judging by the listings in RR 29, the date would
probably be early 1929,

All selections are very good and of course the last
number is "hot" altho halfway thru, it becomes some-
what comball . . . not that I have anything against
cornball arrangements,, in fact I dig them. The scat
choruses digress into something that would even make
Spike Jones turn in Ms grave . , , which leads me to
believe that the film shown at- this particular time may
have been a roomful! of monkees "playing" horns,
harmonicas, etc. Can you fill me in???

Yon may be interested in the information on the other
two Vitaphones in my collection. VA 770-3-2 LEO
RHSMAN AND HIS HOTEL BRUNSWICK ORCH in
"RHYTHMS", While 1 have not played this to get all
the selections, I have noted in my files that one of the
numbers is "Some Of These Days", The remaining
Vitaphone is a 12" transcription and is VA 3154- 1-5,
The only information is . , . "Desert Song" . , , exit
music. There is a date of Aug 13, 1929 rubber-
stamped on the label,

I am currently preparing a study of the FLEXO, NEW
FLEXO s TITAN and UNITY records. These are flexible
plastic discs dating from 1925 to 1939. Some of the
FLEXO records were made for Fox West Coast and were
used for. entrance and exit music. This was not the
only type ■ of recordings that FLEXO manufactured. They
made commercial recordings, private recordings and
advertising records.

MORE ON JOSEPH C, SMITH AND HUGO FREY

(See RR 103/104/105)

from Dr, Kenneth Appleton, Sussex, N„j.

In the November 1919 "THE DOMINANT" music
publishers magazine it is pretty clear that the two
"Dominant" names in New York City music were Joseph
C, Smith and Earl Fuller, Joseph C, Smith has a good
sized profile picture in a full page ad of G, Recordi &
Co. , 12 E, 43rd St, Exclusive publishers of Joseph C.
Smith compositions. Under die picture it states Joseph
C. Smith Orchestra Director Hotel Plaza, New York
City, Further under the picture is a letter with an
authentic looking Joseph C, Smith signature.
Orchestra leaders;
I told you so 'who did it!
My new one step is a riot,
De sure to get it right now and don't overlook the
other numbers in this advert.

I feature them all the time and 1 can't afford to play
anything but the best.

Yours very sincerely,
Joseph C. Smith

The ad lists a little of the music and words of "Who
Did It" and a waltz "Lovely Summertime, " and another
Joseph C, Smith number "Coo Coo",

I. said that Hugo Frey was supposed to be pianist on
some Joseph C, Smith records. In the 1950 edition of
Who is Who In Music there is a biography of Hugo Frey
with no mention of any association with Joseph C, Smith,
He played piano, violin and viola - studied music at
Vienna and the Chicago Conservatory - was violinist
with the Bernhard Listermann Quartet 1896-98 - pianist
with Red Path Concert Co 1898-99 and a conductor of
musical plays in New York City 1906-15. Since 1921

VIC DICKENSON'S "FIRST" RECORDING
CHAUNCEY MOREHOUSE, SCAT VOCALIST ON
'"HARLEM TWIST" (See RR104)

Backensto) that he is indeed the scat vocalist on
Red Nichols* HARLEM TWIST, (VT 21560), So \
this is one time that aural evidence turned out. right, ...
